A word from Florida Jitney about your safety.

More than nearly any other location in America, The Villages and the surrounding areas offer an exceptionally strong sense of community.  Friends reaching out to friends.  Neighbors helping neighbors.  And in a community with upwards of 70,000 retirees, there is no shortage of individuals with a community spirit and a willingness to help others.  One can see this even when the need arises for a ride to the airport.

For years, comedians have had jokes about how friends don’t let friends drive to the airport.  After all, who wants to spend hours out of ones day, driving all over the countryside to drop someone off at the terminal?  To fill the void, many retired individuals, mostly men, advertise their willingness to drive people to the airport, usually for a modest fee.  They are extremely well-meaning and the fares are often bargain basement!  They are usually below what legitimate companies are able to charge, given the legitimate costs of doing business.

But there is a darker, unintentional side to what began as a well meaning gesture.  There are realistic issues of health and safety and life and death.  A well intentioned retiree  is transporting your loved ones in the back of his car.  You need to ask yourself, is he healthy?  Has he taken an exam and is anyone monitoring his abilities?  Is he on prescriptions that could result in an over-medication that would affect his driving and reaction time?  There is always the need to concern oneself whether or not the driver has been drinking.  Who is administering this persons random drug and alcohol testing?  If a retired gentleman offers his driving services to raise money, do we know that he has remained current with the most basic of auto insurance and has not let the policy lapse altogether?  And who can tell if this gentleman has a history of DUI’s or any other sort of criminal background we won’t describe here.

Retirees who drive strangers to the airport for a fee are implying that they are operating a legitimate business.  If it were a legitimate business, ask to see the permits and the insurance cards.  Receiving the proper authority to enter the airport grounds is another necessity to ensure law enforcement won’t approach the vehicle and ask questions as to the authenticity of this “business.”  Legitimate businesses operate with all of the proper licenses, insurances and permits and spend thousands of dollars per year per vehicle to maintain their fleet according to the law.  These fees are called exorbitant by some, but they must be paid to remain compliant, legal and in good standing to operate.  This is part of the cost of doing business and explains in part, why rates are higher than any of us want them to be.  But they are legal and when good and wanting members of the community need services, such as what the Florida Jitney provides, they will be ready, willing and able to provide the service.

Every time a consumer chooses an illegal operator over a legitimate business, everyone may suffer in the long run.  Legitimate companies need you to support them so they will be there for you when you need them.  The Florida Jitney has spared no expense in developing its safety protocol.  We are the only regional company that requires drug and alcohol testing of all of its drivers and travel assistants.  Frequent and random tests continue during ones employment with the Florida Jitney.   Criminal background checks are run on all of our staff.  The safety, the comfort and trust of our guests mean the world to us and we have taken steps beyond what is required to protect our clientele.

So in this day and age, when transportation providers are transporting your most precious cargo – your family and loved ones, remember to hire a company that understands the importance and the responsibility they are accepting.  It is one of life’s great ironies that some people spend more time seeking out a professional plumber to fix a leaky faucet, yet would let their children ride in the back of a car not knowing anything about him or the “company” being hired.

The Florida Jitney has a growing fleet of new, 2008 state-of-the-art luxury mini-coaches.  Pictured are some of the crew of professional drivers and professional Travel Assistants that operate along “The Villages to Sanford Express.”

Bigger is not always better.  It is true, whether we are speaking of our small, quaint communities throughout northern Lake County or of the petite, mini-coaches that comprise the Florida Jitney Company fleet.  Both our communities and the Florida Jitney coaches are among the most unique aspects of Florida culture.  Likewise,  the Sanford International Airport, small by comparison to the mammoth Orlando International Airport, is widely acclaimed for its compactness, convenience and accessibility.

In a relatively short period of time, the Sanford International Airport has garnered acclaim and high praise.  Residents of The Villages, Lady Lake, Leesburg, Tavares, Mount Dora, to name a few noteworthy communities as well as others from throughout Lake County, prefer to travel in and out of the Sanford International Airport.

So how is it that Sanford International Airport has generated such popularity and loyalty from travelers?  Our survey results indicate that passengers appreciate the easy access of Sanford International Airport.  Most notably, the lack of the hassles and inconveniences associated with air travel in major airports is the feature most often cited as a benefit in utilizing the Sanford International Airport.

There is also a noted preference for the variety of discounted carriers utilizing Sanford International Airport.  International visitors, particularly travelers from the United Kingdom, favor using the discount air carriers that fly in and out of Sanford International Airport.  American travelers, particularly those coming from or going to the Midwestern states of the United States, enjoy utilizing Allegiant Air, which is arguably, the most popular airline landing at Sanford International Airport.

And so, enter The Florida Jitney and Limousine Company.  Like the smaller communities we serve and much like the Sanford International Airport itself, the Florida Jitney and Limousine Company is not striving to be the biggest of all American ground transport companies.  Instead, our goal each and every day is to provide our guests with the finest experience one could want of a Ground Transportation company.  We strive to provide luxury, convenience and affordability to each and every guest.

So whether you consider us as your preferred ground transport company or if, like so many others, you have come to see us as your “second car,” the Florida Jitney and Limousine Company will always be here with continuous service, throughout every day and evening, 365 days a year, to provide you fast, frequent and reliable service.
